Panasonic has introduced its Toughbook S9, a 12.1-inch laptop with an integrated DVD drive. Weighing 3.0 pounds, the company claims this model is the lightest in the 12.1-inch segment. The device is powered by the Intel Core i5-520M vPro processor (2.4 GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93 GHz, and can deliver up to 11 hours of battery life with a standard battery and comes with optional Gobi2000 mobile broadband.

The model is understood to have been designed to withstand “the demands of a highly mobile work environment”. So, we assume it will be able to endure drops, bumps and spills (up to 6 ounces/200 cc). In fact, the company has informed that the notebook is engineered to survive a 30-inch drop to the base of the unit while operating. That’s what the company’s saying and also that the Toughbook S9 successfully survives drops of 12-inch from any angle using the MIL-STD-810G drop procedure. So, you need not testing its drop feature yourself.

The Toughbook S9 offers a variety of embedded wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and optional Gobi2000 mobile broadband technology from Qualcomm. The notebook will be certified on the Sprint and Verizon Wireless networks. So, mobile workers can hope to stay connected at all times.

Data security features include trusted platform module (TPM) security chip version 1.2, the Computrace theft protection agent in the BIOS, Intel Anti-Theft technology, a cable lock slot, password security and an optional fingerprint reader.
