SATA 3.0 interface specification has been announced officially which would eventually replace SATA 2.0 technology. SATA 3.0 will improve the connectivity speed of hard disk drives, solid drives, optical drives and tape drives by doubling the speed of SATA 2 devices. In addition to the 6Gb/s fast transfer speeds and enhancements to support multimedia applications, SATA 3.0 provides new features which will improve the connectivity between today’s storage devices.

The main criteria for today’s storage devices is the Speed. So providing faster speeds with SATA revision 3.0 will help companies to develop faster serial ATA products. After SATA-IO has made the official announcement, several companies are likely to announce their latest storage solutions, featuring the newly announced specifications.

Some of the highlighted features of SATA 3.0

  • Provides a new Native Command Queuing(NCQ) streaming command which enables isochronous data transfer for bandwidth-hungry audio and video applications.
  • NCQ management to optimize the performance by enabling host processing and management of outstanding NCQ commands.
  • A Small Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for more compact 1.8 inch storage devices.
  • A Connector to Accommodate 7mm optical disk drives for thinner and lighter notebooks is designed.
  • Alignment with the INCITS ATA8-ACS standard.

Also note that SATA 3 is backwards compatible with current SATA 2 devices.
