Bangalore based digital publisher EC Media International has ushered in good tidings for online readers in India by announcing a cheaper version of its e-book reader Wink. Expected to be launched in the next few months, the new Wink device will be available with support for 15 languages, and at almost half the price of the original Wink that cost around Rs. 12,000. A new version of Wink is likely to come in a starting price of Rs. 6,000.

The new models for the Indian market include Wink LITE (presently on sale), Wink NOVE, Wink ACE and Wink ARK (Wink XTS, Wink 3G, Wink XTR and Wink 3G+). Look-wise, the budget versions are likely to have 5-inch displays, smaller than the original screen by about an inch. In terms of features, however, the new versions may retain most of the features of the existing Wink; but they will be customized to suit the Indian audience.

Wink offers over 200,000 titles. The company is expected to increase that number, even double it, through tie-ups with Indian and international publishers. The company is planning to announce discounts and free e-books (up to 50 free titles) as well to draw the discerning Indian customer to the new gadgets. We hear, a few widely-read newspapers in the country will also be made available in the new versions in e-book format. Also on the anvil is a variant with color display. The Wink is currently available through Croma, Reliance, Crossword and Landmark outlets in the country.
