Flash Dreambox DM500s Using RS232 Serial COM Port and Universal DreamUp Utility

Earlier we wrote about reflashing and upgrading of Dreambox DM500s using the FlashWizard and this article mentions about a much simpler method of flashing that utilizes RS232 serial COM, a common found port in Dreambox decoders. This method of recovering does not involve any mishaps due to undetectable or clinging Linux GUI, making users convenient to use the process.

Ensure that you have the right null modem serial RS232 COM cable purchased in electronics shop. Three pins of the COM port are required for connectivity, namely pin 2, 3 and pin 5. Connect pin 2 (of one end) to pin 3 (of the other end) and vice versa whilst sustaining pin 5 from one end to the other. Now download the Universal DreamUp utility and launch it with both PC and Dreambox decoder connected. After installing the Universal Dream Up utility, first go to select the corresponding Com port of the PC on the utility screen, make sure not to tick ‘Use Network’ and leave all the Local IP/ Remote IP empty.

Once the connection is successfully made, you will be prompted with ‘Box attached and ready’ message on the status. Now, browse the correct image file (in .IMG format) and perform flashing by selecting ‘Flash’ button. For a safer flashing, do flash erase, which clears all the content in the flash embedded in the system. Though this flashing process is a bit slow, with 10kb per second uploading it make approximately take 10 minutes to complete the whole process. After the complete flash process is completed, the CRC32 on STB, erase flash, as well as flashing from memory will be automatically calculated and provided for your reference. As now you are aware of the procedure, rejoice flashing your Dreambox!
