Leaked news usually comes with its share of excitement. And this one is clearly one of the most exciting leaks, particularly for Harry Potter fans. We are referring to the first 36 minutes footage of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on BitTorrent sites. With this Harry Potter film slated for worldwide premiere later this week (on Thursday to be precise) the extended preview on BitTorrent has sent Potter fans into a tizzy.

The finale of the Harry Potter film series will be in two parts and the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 forms the first half of the two-part finale. Industry analysts predict the movie will gross over a billion dollars in the near future.

This isn’t the first time there has been BitTorrent buzz around Harry Potter. We may recall ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ ended up with an unusual tag of being one of the ‘most pirated movies’ last year. And those with little or no qualms over piracy issues will look to do the same this time as well. And the just-released teaser is expected to fan such downloads further.

Even as we write this report, the more adventurous of the lot are also searching to grab a full copy of the film online. In fact, this upcoming film is being reported to be already the most searched for film on some popular torrent sites. While they may not have got access to the full version, the discovery of the 36-min DVD screener a few hours ago may have been rewarding nonetheless.

We hear the screener was released by the group iNK and comes with watermarks and other screener features. Considering the history of previous leaks, it is likely that the screener may have been ‘time-limited’ fearing a possible leak. In such a scenario, the leak may do more good than harm because of the excitement it has been able to generate and the media footage it has been able to garner.

So, as long as the full version of the film isn’t leaked, Warner Bros. Pictures should actually have nothing to fret. After all, if the initial bit is engaging, it is but obvious that cinegoers and Harry Potter buffs will buy a ticket to watch the full story unfold. Some even suspect the production house may have ‘intentionally leaked’ the screener to create hype.

However, Warner Bros. has been quick to issue an official statement in this regard calling the leak “a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros property:

“This constitutes a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros. property. We are working actively to restrict and/or remove copies that may be available. Also, we are vigorously investigating this matter and will prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law.”
