ISRO Launches Bhuvan – Indian Earth Observation Visualization

The chairman G Madhavan Nair of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has unveiled “Bhuvan” which means ‘earth’ in Sanskrit. Bhuvan is a Geoportal of Indian Space Research Organisation which showcases the Indian Imaging Capabilities in Multi-sensor, Multi-platform and Multi-temporal domain. The portal gives you a gateway to explore and discover virtual earth in 3D space with specific emphasis on Indian region. Bhuvan uses images taken by the ISRO’s remote sensing satellites and it builds a 3-D Map of the world.

Bhuvan provides a fast and very friendly way to look at IRS satellite data and thematic information in geographic context which can be used for management, planning and visualization. Bhuvans zoom capability is superior to other tools like Google Earth and Wikimapia. Bhuvan will show images upto 10 meters, Google Earth shows details upto 200 meters distance and Wikimapia upto 50 meters. The coverage of Indian terrains is atleast six meters of resolution and with spatial resolution of 55 meters.

Features of Bhuvan

  • Determination of exactly when a specific area was imaged
  • Bookmark locations using the draw tool to place an icon.
  • Zooms upto 10 meters, multi-layer information with views of different dates available and it uses Indian satellites.
  • Data provided by Bhuvan is satellite imagery, Thematic information, base layers, census information and Metadata.

In order to use the service, first you should signup and then download Bhuvan plug-in for Internet Explorer. You will also need DirectX 9.0 or higher version and Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or above for installing the plug-in. System requirements are Windows XP/Vista, 512 MB RAM, 2GB free space of hard disk, 1280×1024 of screen with “32-bit True Color”, 3D capable graphics card with 32MB of RAM and network speed of 256Kbits/sec.
