Consider this the iPhone Dev Team’s Halloween treat. The team has just released a new version (0.9.6b2) of Redsn0w. Based on GeoHot’s Limera1n exploit, the new version can jailbreak iOS 4.1 on:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPad (on iOS 3.2.2)
  • iPod touch 4G / 3G / 2G (non-MC model).

Announcing the incorporation of the Limera1n exploit into Redsn0w, the team informed that they have added a ‘few extras’ that include:

  • Custom bootlogos for iPhone3G/iPhone3GS/iPod2G users (with qualifying bootroms)
  • An option that implements the ‘DFU’ button in PwnageTool. This button (which you can use from Windows) lets you prepare your device for a custom DFU.

Downloading Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 for Windows or Mac is easy. Choose from the following links:

Download Redsn0w for Mac OS X

Download Redsn0w for Windows

Windows users can run Redsn0w and select the ‘Just enter pwned DFU mode right now’ option; and subsequently run iTunes and choose a custom IPSW from PwnageTool. This they can do by pressing Shift+Restore. Your device can now restore to custom firmware.

Redsn0w, like Sn0wbreeze, Blackra1n and PwnageTool, is a jailbreaking tool for iPhone and iPod Touch, which creates a custom jailbroken firmware sans an upgraded baseband, enabling users to unlock unlock their phones. For those planning to unlock their device, it would be wise not to upgrade their phones to  iOS 4.2 as upgrading it might upgrade their baseband; and they may not be able to unlock their phones later. Instead they would do well to wait for the release of the new version of Redsn0w.
