How to Install iOS 4.2 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPad and iPod Touch 4G, 3G, 2G

As mentioned earlier Apple has released the iOS 4.2 Firmware update for iPhone and iPod Touch. The latest iOS 4.2 firmware update adds many feature like – Game Center, iTunes TV show rentals, Even better Mail, Find text on web pages, Notes with fonts, Reply to calendar invitations, Keyboard and dictionary enhancements, Accessibility enhancements, Enhanced enterprise support and Messaging with text tones. iOS 4.2 will be available as a free download for all the users, but not all the features are available in all the models. iOS 4.2 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad and iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 2G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G.

Procedure to Install iOS 4.2 on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes. You can directly download and install iTunes 10 from Apple website or alternatively you can open iTunes, click on Help and then click on Check for updates to update your current version of iTunes.
  2. After the installation is complete, connect your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to your Windows or Mac machine and iTunes will be launched automatically or else launch it manually.
  3. Now take a backup of your data in case if something goes wrong it will be useful. Now select your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch from the left sidebar and open the summary page on the right.
  4. iTunes will display the current firmware version on your device. Now click the “Check For Update” button to download and install the latest iOS 4.2 Firmware on your iDevice. Do not disconnect your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch until the update has finished.
