How to Install iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS, 3G and iPod Touch 3G, 2G

As mentioned earlier Apple has released the iOS 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch. The latest iOS 4.0 firmware updates brings in many features like Multitasking, Folders, Even better Mail, iBooks, Create playlists, 5x digital zoom, Tap to focus video, Faces and Places in Photos, Home screen wallpaper, Gift apps, Spell checking and Wireless keyboard support. iOS 4 will be available as a free download for all the users, but not all the features are available in all the models. iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod touch 3G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G.

Procedure to Install iOS 4 on Your iPhone or iPod Touch

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes – iTunes 9.2. You can directly download and install iTunes 9.2 from Apple website or alternatively you can open iTunes, click on Help and then click on Check for updates to update your current version of iTunes.
  2. After the installation is complete, connect your iPhone/iPod Touch to your Windows or Mac machine and iTunes will be launched automatically or else you need to launch it manually.
  3. Now take a backup of your data in case if something goes wrong it will be useful. Now select your iPhone/iPod touch from the left sidebar and open the summary page on the right.
  4. iTunes will display the current firmware version on your device. Now click the “Check For Update” button to download and install the latest iOS 4 Firmware on your iDevice. Do not disconnect your iPhone/iPod touch until the update has finished.
