Apple has just released iOS 4.2.1 GM for the iPhone 4, 3G, 3GS, the iPad and the iPod Touch presently available to developers only. And as expected, we have news that the build can be jailbroken. You need to use the latest version Redsn0w, v.0.9.6b2, which is based on the Limera1n exploit, enabling users to pwn iOS devices for life.

Redmond Pie has noted that Cydia, however, does not work for the latest build and attributes it to Apple’s changing some private APIs used by Cydia in iOS 4.2.x. The result is Cydia will crash when users try to run. However, it reported that “an iOS 4.2.1 compatible version of Cydia is ready and will go live as soon as iOS 4.2.1 is released to public. Also since you have full root access on the device, you can install jailbreak-apps via SSH for now until the new version of Cydia is live.”

Supported deviced for the iOS 4.2.1 compatible version of Cydia include:

  • iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G
  • iPod Touch 2G/3G/4G

If you wish to unlock your iDevice, stay away from the new version iOS. If you do so, you may be stuck with a device you may never be able unlock.
