Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Nokia have joined hands for a new project. The duo recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding under which select IGNOU certification programmes will be offered on Ovi Life Tools enabled Nokia handsets. To start off, the duo will pilot a Certificate Programme in Functional English (CFE) on Nokia devices supporting the Ovi Life Tools. The six-month programme will kick off in January 2011 in selected districts of Maharashtra. An aspiring student will have to shell out Rs. 1,900 to avail of the service. IGNOU intends to divide the programme in three levels — English in daily life, English in education and joining the workforce.

Enrolled students will receive study material and related support from IGNOU; and also get their daily dose of learning content via Ovi Life Tools services on their cell phones. From filling in admission forms via Ovi Life Tools to accessing programme-related info through SMS, the pilot aims to equip its students with a simple understanding of the language that will enable them to find their way around situations where basic knowledge of English is imperative. On successful completion of the programme (we hear IGNOU will also conduct exams at the end of the course), students will receive certificates from IGNOU.

Reports suggest the programme will be available on more than 12 variants of Nokia devices pricing between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 6,000, Including Nokia 2700, Nokia 2730 Classic, Nokia 2690, Nokia 1800 and Nokia 1616. If January programme gets the desired response from Ovi Lifers, the may also launch other certifications programmes in the future, in other Indian states as well.
