Nokia, the pioneer mobile handset manufacturer has unveiled impressive Symbian based handset – Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type in Indian markets. At a very affordable price, Nokia X3-02 sports many interesting features taking smartphones to a new horizon. We got to review the handset and in this article we have listed the pros and cons of the handset that would help you to know more about the handset.

Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is a Series 40 6th edition based mobile handset that comes with small visual update making it look like much similar to the S60 handsets. Nokia X3-02 is the X-series alternative of the first hybrid handset Nokia C3-01 which featured both touch and keypad-input. As the name indicates, Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type comes with a touch screen and a keypad allowing users to input using both. Nokia X3-02 is a light weighted candy bar phone which has a dedicated music button at the side, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, micro USB and 2 mm Nokia charging port at the top. Interestingly Nokia X3-02’s 16 digit keypad does not have a traditional D-pad and has star, pound and zero keys in a column to the right of the number keys with call, email, music, and end keys in a row unlike many other phones in the market. Fitting comfortably in your palms, Nokia X3-02 has a curved surface at the bottom and looks quiet interesting as well as rugged. However, the four-button-wide keypad design of the handset seems unusual.

Nokia has managed not to repeat the mistakes in 5800 XpressMusic handset by refining the interface of Nokia X3-02. Features of Nokia X3-02 includes Music player, in-built accelerometer, proximity sensor, support for Wi-Fi and 3G – HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps and many more. Though the RAM, CPU speed and type are not yet know, this handset seems to have good responsive interface as most S40 devices do.

Weighing only 77.4 grams, Nokia X3-02 sports 2.4 inches QVGA – TFT resistive touchscreen which is a little disappointing when there are handsets available at the same price range with a better touch capabilities. But, this tiny candy bar handset comes power packed with features that users cannot resist, the 5MP camera with resolutions of 2592×1944 pixels placed above the battery cover makes it really worthier for the price being paid.

Nokia, famous for its music version handsets tries to create magic even in this handset as well. Handling audio and videos in wide range of formats like MP3, MP4, WAV, H.264, AAC+, XviD, WMA, and WMV, the in-built Media player works pretty well. In-built Picture editor is another impressive feature of this handset that allows you to edit pictures and save them at an ease. However, we noticed that the multi tasking capabilities of the handset are limited only to the music playback feature.

This handset comes with a pre-installed Nokia Ovi-Store and includes Wi-Fi support allowing users to browse through internet conveniently. Default web browser of this handset is much like the one in Symbian, but users will get Opera Mini pre-loaded with the handset, which acts like a savior for many users. Nokia X3-02 also has built-in email client that supports multiple emails such as Ovi mail, Gmail, Hotmail, POP3 and IMAP. Gtalk and Google contacts can also be accessed once you integrate your Gmail account on the handset. Nokia X3-02 lacks native Exchange support for email, contacts, or calendars. Accessibility to Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter is also provided, but the response time to log in to these sites seemed little sluggish and Nokia could have improvised it.

Even though users can use Google Maps, disappointingly Ovi Maps cannot be accessed through this handset as it does not support GPS. As all the S40 devices, Nokia X3-02 also lacks the consistent notifications feature. Lack of Exchange integration, multi tasking capabilities, consistent notifications, resistive touch screen and no GPS connectivity enables other competitive budget phones to gain a better place in the market.

Nokia X3-02 supports Java applications and allows users to install their favorite java based games. Other features of Nokia X3-02 includes kinetic scrolling, long presses, haptic feedback for touch screen, memory expandable to 32 GB, Bluetooth, SMS /MMS capabilities, Stereo FM radio with RDS, Standard Li-Ion 860 mAh battery and many more. Nokia X3-02 will be available in five shades (White Silver, Dark Metal, Petrol Blue, Pink, Lilac) providing users a wide option to choose from. Price of this handset is very affordable at around Rs 8000/- for the features being offered. In case you are need a smartphone with multitasking and GPS capabilities then this might not be the right choice, but if you are looking for a sleek stylish touch and type handset with good camera and impressive features which isn’t in ultra budget, then this can be the one you are looking for, so give it a shot!

I bought this phone for my husband and he absolutly loves it. He is a type of person who doesn’t like new touch screen phones. So to make this transition smoother for him I got him this phone that combines best of both worlds and he just loves it. It gives him ability to still use keypad if he’d like as well as slowly get use to touching technics. In addition, this phone is very “good” looking: small and modern looking, which is a big plus. Also, pics are great, talk hours are great(even though it is half touch phone, easily go for three days without charging). In general, great phone for people who still would like to use keypad.
