If you are looking to create a Virtual Hard Disk on an online Windows machine then you can try out Disk2vhd. Disk2vhd is a freeware utility that helps you to create VHD versions of your hard disks that can be used in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). Disk2vhd essentially uses Windows Volume Snapshot capability to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion.

Disk2vhd requires no installation and has got an easy to use interface. All you have to do is just select the drives you would like to create into a virtual disk, give the file a name and then click the “Create” button. Disk2vhd will create one VHD for each disk on which selected volumes reside. It preserves the partitioning information of the disk, but only copies the data contents for volumes on the disk that are selected. This enables you to capture just system volumes and exclude data volumes.

Command Line Usage of Disk2vhd

Disk2vhd also includes a command-line option that enable you to script the creation of VHDs. You can specify the volumes you want to include in a snapshot by drive letter (e.g. c:) or use “*” to include all volumes.

Usage: disk2vhd <[drive: [drive:]...]|[*]>
Example: disk2vhd * g:\vhd_test\my_snapshot.vhd
