Whenever you format a hard disk or a partition in Windows, it assigns a new serial number to it. This serial number is usually associated with many applications and a change to the serial number may cause some problems. Recently I had a similar problem with an application as I formatted my disk. So I was looking for an application to change the serial number of Hard Disk without formatting and found Hard Disk Serial Number Changer.

Hard Disk Serial Number Changer” is a freeware utility to change the volume serial number of a hard drive. [The hard disk serial number is the volume serial number assigned by Windows and not the one assigned by the manufacturer.] With this tool you can assign the old serial number to a newly formatted drive or change the current volume serial number without reformatting your hard drive.

The standard serial number format is XXXX-XXXX which uses HEX symbols(0-9, A, B, C, D, E, F). So you can just enter the serial number that you need in the edit box and reboot your PC. Hard Disk Serial Number Changer works with NTFS, FAT, and FAT32 file systems. It works on Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 2000/2003/NT server and Windows server 2008.

I tried your “hard disk serial number changer” on a Packard Bell X4623 with Windows 7 installed but got the information message “Unable to write to this disk in drive.”
This applies to both the C: drive aswell as the D: drive. The motherboard is an MCP73T-AD.

Can you help me to find the cause so I can change the serial number.

    Thanks,
    Theo
