Many of us face problems to back up or restore MBR on multi boot systems, but now this can be easily done with a command line tool called MBRWizard. For those unaware of Master Boot Record (MBR), it is a 512 byte boot sector which resides on the first sector of a hard disk. Backing or restore MBR plays a major role as MBR is essential for booting into the Windows operating system and is responsible for bootstrapping the operating system into memory as well as holding disk’s primary partition table and repairing MBR might eventually wipe out the entire data.

MBRWizard is a command line tool that not only lets you save, restore and repair MBR but also enables you to create new partitions, align as well as delete them too. Installation and usage of this MBRWizard is quite a simple process, all you have to do is download the MBRWizard CLI tool, open Windows Command Prompt, navigate to the location where you saved the MBRWizard to run MBRWizard from any location. After you have browsed to the location of MBRWizard use the below commands to backup or restore MBR.

How to Backup Master Boot Record (MBR)

Enter the below command in the command prompt to back up MBR to E:\myMBRbackup.

MBRWiz /save=MBR /filename=E:\myMBRbackup

How to Restore Master Boot Record (MBR)

Enter the below command in the command prompt to back up MBR from E:\myMBRbackup.

MBRWiz /restore=MBR /filename=E:\myMBRbackup

You listed an invalid link, try this one instead: http://firesage.com/mbrwizard.php

Also, they have both a free command line app, or a $5 GUI version that is very easy to use. Also, the GUI helped me prevent/repair a very stupid command line mistake, just something to think about.

    Cheers
