By selecting a username all the Facebook users will be able to reflect their identity in the Web address for their user profile or for Facebook Pages instead of having a randomly generated number. And if there are multiple administrators for a page, the first username which will be selected by one of the administrators will be associated with that page. For the application profile you should choose a username that closely matches the name of your application.

Procedure to know if a Facebook username is already available

After selecting the username for your application profile or company name, you can see a green check mark which indicates that the name is available before you actually claim it. Sometimes your desired username may not be available as someone else will be using it as FaceBook has reserved certain usernames.

So before choosing your username, just think once as it cannot be changed again once you have selected. It surely gives people a useful way to maintain the online identities.
