Apple recently published a letter addressing iPhone 4 users worldwide in its official site. This letter mainly emphasized upon the root causes for reception problems and the upcoming software update that implements new formula for analyzing the signal strength. Apple not only informs all the iPhone 4 users about the success of its next-gen iPhone and accolades it received worldwide but also supports iPhone 4 by telling the users about how holding the device affects the signal reception strength.

According to the letter, Apple has discovered the cause for the dramatic drop in signal bars in the iPhone is the faulty formula that they used to calculate the number of bars of signal strength to be displayed. After investigation, Apple realized that the bars displayed for a given signal strength were wrong as they mistakenly displayed two more than it should due to the erroneous formula implemented. Users observing sudden drop of signal bars whilst gripping their iPhone’s in a certain way is most likely to be in an area with very weak signal strength and the handset erroneously displayed the 4 to 5 bars indicating the signal reception to be high.

Apple also intimates users that the upcoming software update for iPhone 4 (iOS 4.1/iOS 4.0.1) will adopt AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating the number of bars based on the signal strength. Incorporating corrected formula, this software update will help Apple’s iPhone 4 to provide users with a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. Apple says this software update will be free and will soon be available for not only iPhone 4 but also the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G as well.

All the iPhone 4 users are suggested to wait until the update is released and if they are not satisfied with the performance, Apple will refund for the undamaged iPhone returned to their any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase.
