VLC, the open source cross-platform media player, is now available on Apple’s App Store. According to the developer Applidium, the new iPad version comes with VLC’s ability to play damaged files. So, stop fretting over missing codecs because the developer promises, “Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that’s still intact”.

The app will initially be available for the iPad. But the developer has revealed that is planning come up with an iPhone and iPod version soon. Considering Apple’s earlier “duplication of functionality” stand, some had wondered if an alternate video player (Apple already has a video player) will be able to find its way into the App Store. However, following the release of Apple’s latest developer guidelines, the Cupertino maker seems to have softened its stand. VLC is considered a heavy-duty multimedia player with builds for Windows, OS X, and Linux (and now iOS). No wonder, its inclusion in the App Store has got avid video watchers predictably excited.
