Autodesk has extended its AutoCAD program for drafting and design through the cloud to web and Apple devices by launching AutoCAD WS for iOS. Available for free download, the mobile app enables users to view and work with AutoCAD drawings directly on their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Users can utilize the touch and gesture interface of their iPad or iPhone to view, annotate, and revise drawings from any location.

The solution is expected to come in handy for professionals on the field as it will reduce the need to carry around over-sized paper drawings. The app comes with convenient viewing, editing and sharing options that architects, CAD technicians, designers, engineers, project managers, and CAD/IT managers are likely to find handy. The interface comes with a multi-zoom and pan feature for easier navigation. The app immediately captures changes made by a user and others in the online workspace.  The work can also be shared directly from a user’s iDevice. Here’s a cursory glance at the features of the app:

• Open DWG drawings uploaded to AutoCAD WS online workspace
• See all aspects of a DWG file, including external references, layers, and image underlays
• Use Multi-Touch zoom and pan to navigate large drawings

• Draw or edit shapes using Snap and Ortho modes
• Add and edit text annotations directly on the device sans the need for paper mark-ups
• Validate distance measurements in the drawing while the user is onsite
