A Russian developer named LeshaK was the first to gain root access on the Galaxy S (i9000) and the guys over at XDA-developers have taken his work and ported the code to work with the U.S. versions of the phone. Samsung Galaxy S is yet to arrive on all carriers as AT&T Captivate, Verizon Fascinate, T-Mobile Vibrant and Sprint Epic 4G.

It looks like gaining root access on Galaxy S is as simple as flashing an update.zip file and it is confirmed that the updated code works on the AT&T Captivate and T-Mobile Vibrant. The developer mentions that only a single modification to the update script is required for each device. As the update worked on Captivate and Vibrant it should also flawlessly work on the Sprint Epic 4G and Verizon Fascinate as well.

Paul O’Brien of Modaco has already created a custom ROM for the international version of Galaxy S but it has yet to be tested on the U.S. variants of Galaxy S. All the Galaxy S devices are nearly identical so future ROMs should be compatible with very minor tweaks in the code.
