Apple has launched Safari 5.0.1, the latest version of its Safari web browser. This release will officially enable third-party extension support and will mark the debut of the Safari Extensions Gallery. The extensions support in Safari was already provided in Safari 5 in the month of June. However, it was partially activated for developers, enabling them to create extensions. The extensions can be created with web technologies like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS and these extensions allow developers to add new features and functionality to Apple’s browser.

Safari has introduced its extensions support quite late as compared to its competing browsers, Firefox and Chrome. Nevertheless, it already has a large number of extensions like of Twitter, Amazon, MLB, eBay, and other developers.

“Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic,” said Brian Croll, Apple’s vice president of OS X Product Marketing. He also added – “We’re thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari.”

In addition to enabling Extensions, Safari 5.0.1 also contains enhancements to stability, accessibility and security. This version addresses two important security flaws. Firstly, one where AutoFill could be called without user interaction giving an attacker your personal information, and another issue where a maliciously-crafted RSS feed could let an attacker copy files from your computer. The accessibility has been enhanced by providing more accurate Top Hit results in the Address Field and more accurate timing for CSS animations. The stability issues encountered when using the Safari Reader keyboard shortcut and when scrolling through MobileMe Mail have also been effectively addressed. These fixes have also been delivered in the 4.1.1 update to Safari for Mac OS X Tiger.
