IS Drive App Hits App Store, Will Allow ImageShack Users to Add Torrent Downloads

With Apple recently loosening its developer guidelines, a number of developers are trying their luck again with their apps. Meanwhile, a new mobile application to find its way into the App Store is a BitTorrent app, called IS Drive. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol used for distributing large amounts of data. It’s an interesting development because Apple had earlier rejected a BitTorrent app because the company had then thought that “this category of application is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights.”

IS Drive allows users of ImageShack’s torrent download service to control and add torrent downloads. The app was earlier available in the Cydia store for jailbroken iPhones as Jack Torrents. The app costs $4.99, and users will need to subscribe to ImageShack’s torrent download service to use the app

Revealing how he managed to get the app into the App store, the developer Derek Kepner said, “I always had the thought that if I didn’t call the app a ‘torrent client,’ Apple would probably let it through the review process. After all, there is no real torrenting happening on the client side. It’s *not* a torrent client. It’s an ImageShack Drive client.” He also admitted that he was “very careful with this release to not use the word ‘torrent,’ and I’ll continue to carefully add new features, so stay tuned.” Kepner also added “I’m on dangerous ground here” and insisted the app is not designed to break the law.
