How To Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 With Redsn0w 0.9.6 on Windows

Written By Sam on 8 October 2010

After a long wait the iPhone DevTeam has released the Windows version of RedSn0w 0.9.6b1 which can be used to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. The Dev-Team has earlier released redsn0w 0.9.6 for Mac OS X. Redsn0w can also be used to jailbreak iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 still uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that the Dev team have been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g and nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak. If you are using ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone then DO NOT use this updated redsn0w. If you use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple and if you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever).

Procedure to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G With Redsn0w

  • Download the latest version of iTunes and update your iPhone 3G to the latest iOS 4.1 Firmware.
  • Download redsn0w 0.9.6 for Windows and also download iOS 4.0 ipsw file for iPhone 3G.
  • Now run redsn0w 0.9.6 and browse to the original iPhone OS 4.1 ipsw file.
  • Now select “Install Cydia” and click Next. You can also check the new features like “Enable Multitasking”, Enable homescreen wallpaper” and “Enable battery percentage”.
  • Now redsn0w will show you some instructions to enter into Recovery mode.
    • Hold down the “Power” button and immediately without releasing the power button, also hold down the “Home” button. Without releasing the “Home” button, release the “Power” button and keep holding the “Home” button for 30 second or until the installation starts.
  • Your iPhone 3G will reboot once it is jailbroken
