Apple’s new 27-inch LED Cinema Display is now available to order through the company’s online store for $999. What has excited industry watchers is that the new monitor’s 2560×1440 resolution is only a little less than the 30″ ACD’s 2560×1600, which costs $2,499. Featuring a built-in iSight video camera (for video conferencing), microphone and speakers, powered USB 2.0 hub and universal MagSafe connector, the new LED Cinema Display is being touted as an “ideal companion for the MacBook family or a Mac desktop”.

The new 27-inch LED Cinema Display features a 16:9 edge-to-edge glass display suitable for watching high-definition video, for editing or viewing home movies and photos with iLife. The new 27-inch has a 2560 x 1440 resolution and reportedly has 60% more pixels than the 24-inch model of prior-generation. The company said the display uses IPS technology, for better color reproduction and an ‘ultra wide’ 178 degree viewing angle.

The 27-inch display includes an integrated MagSafe charger to keep Mac notebooks charged, built-in Mini DisplayPort connectivity for video and audio input and a powered three-port USB 2.0 hub so customers can charge their iPhone or iPod even when they take their MacBook with them. The display also includes an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the display brightness based on external lighting conditions and uses only as much energy as necessary to provide an optimum viewing experience. The orders are expected to ship in a week or so.
